The word in context of church/Christianity has some nasty connotations. For instance prune faced people in out of date clothes carry sign saying God hates (fill in the blank here). Because so many "religious" words have become polluted we need different tags to attach to, that is IF we are truly different. When our relationship with the Triune God is vibrant it affects our relationship with all human beings, in a positive way. I feel that NOT using the word fundamental is a very good thing.
